Gyro Compass
- The gyro compass, when properly aligned, points to true north (geopositional north)
- It uses a gyroscope whose axis points north
- The gyroscopic effect reduces the sway of the needle and is typically less prone to errors during the ship’s movement
- On most modern ships the GPS feed data to the gyro compass allowing it to apply corrections to the gryo (reducing its error)
- Gyro error is typically small
