Depth Sounders
- The depth sounder is an electronic tool for measuring the distance to the sea floor.
- Current sounders are commonly prone to poor readings when there is interference in the form of bubbles, churned up silt, and other debris that might prevent an accurate measurement
- Be aware of the location of the sounder especially on larger vessels (the depth at the bow may be significantly different from that of the stern)
- Be aware of which units the sounder using (meters vs feet)
- Providing officers with information in regards to the depths getting progressively more shallow or dangerously shallow can be valuable
